In 1819 William Scoresby the younger moved to Liverpool from Whitby
where he commanded the whaling ship "Baffin" built to his own design.
The plans, in his own handwriting, together with this scale model of
his ship are in the Museum. The Baffin was launched on 15th February
1820, had a successful first voyage and in 1822 he mapped the East
coast of Greenland. Scoresby made his twentieth and last voyage in 1823
and then retired from the sea. The "Baffin" finally sank in 1830
when 19 out of 90 ships in the whaling fleet were lost in bad weather
in the Davis Strait. |
