What Whitby Museum offers Schools

Whitby Museum is keen to make its resources available for education and can offer the following services -
- LOAN BOXES of items for handling on selected topics
- VISITS TO SCHOOLS by volunteers with items by arrangement
- SCHOOL PARTY VISITS to Museum @ £1 per student with
advance booking and agreed work programme
- ACTIVITY WORKSHOPS @ £2 per student with prearranged times,
topics and activities
- EASTER SCHOOLS QUIZ AND SHIELD: set annually for local schools with prizes for the winners
- POST-16 RESEARCH BURSARY for 1 or 2 students per year to work on a topic
in our own and associated Museums
WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE
Workshops provide an opportunity for students in small groups to discover
for themselves knowledge which they can afterwards put to use in school
- TOYS (KS1-2 or KS3) uses our magnificent collection of historic toys as
a stimulus to imaginative talk and writing, hands-on exploration and
discussion, or a possible CDT movement project.
- A VICTORIAN SEASIDE RESORT (KS2 or 3 Local study) shows how
Whitby changed with the coming of the railway, what it offered to holiday-makers, what they did and what some famous visitors thought of it.
- IN THE PLANNING STAGE - EXPLORATION/WHALING for KS2 or 3 using materials connected with shipping, Capt Cook, Scoresby, ethnographic artefacts, etc
- IN THE PLANNING STAGE - JURASSIC WORKSHOP with hands-on study of fossils in the context of an introductory overview.
We are open to suggestions for further topics.
LOAN BOXES AVAILABLE
- VICTORIAN SOCIAL HISTORY
Two boxes of artefacts, with explanatory notes, are available for
loan to schools. Please telephone to book these.
- GEOLOGY A collection of hands on material is being prepared.
INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH
Post-16 students should submit
- a concise research proposal on
one side of A4 with personal and study details showing how
the research would contribute to their studies
- a teacher's supporting reference.
They are recommended to contact the Museum to discuss their project with the Education Co-ordinator in terms of what the Museum has before submitting
a formal proposal.
