Alum, The Magical Mineral   August 3rd 2010 - November 2010

Alum, The Magic Mineral uses documents, illustrations, objects and stories to trace the history of this fascinating mineral from ancient Egypt, Rome and China, through the alchemists of the Middle Ages and up to the beginnings of the industry in Yorkshire. Visitors will then see where and how alum was found and made on the Yorkshire coast, and the crucial effect of its discovery on the economy of pre-industrial Britain. We show how alum brought about a major development in the study of fossils and evolution and how it unearthed some spectacular marine reptiles. The exhibition also shows how alum was and is used in textile, foods, medicines. And finally, using old and present-day photographs, we show how the alum industry profoundly altered the landscape of the Yorkshire coast.
