COINS ![]() ![]() Silver denarius of Hadrian from Ugthorpe Henry III penny
The museum has a collection of Roman coins, including groups found at the late Roman signal station at Goldsborough, from the site of Whitby Abbey, and also a small hoard from Ugthorpe, together with a number of scattered examples from the town and area; most of these date from late in the Roman period, but the Ugthorpe hoard is 1st-2nd century - a small group of survivors from a much larger hoard found around 1800 and melted down at the time. We have Anglian (Northumbrian) coins also found at the Abbey excavations in the 1920s; samples of these are displayed with the Abbey archaeology. There is also a small display of British coins intended to show the development of our money from pre-Roman times to the present. MEDALS
There are various medals and commemorative medallions, some local, depicting the opening of railways, bridges etc. The medals start with a Trafalgar medal to George Wilson who sailed on 'The Revenge' captained by Captain Moorsom and go through to the Great War of 1939-45 : some have local connections and have accompanying photographs and other associated items including in one case the military cross. We have medals from one family spanning several generations starting with the Indian Mutiny 1857 - 1858, Boer War, First and Second World Wars. They all served in the Royal Artillery. There are also letters and photographs to go with them. There are also life-saving medals such as one belonging to Henry Freeman the sole survivor of the 1861 disaster and a medal presented to a local captain by the President of the U.S.A. for the rescue of the crew of an american Schooner in 1898. | ||||||
