The Society - Support Us

Whitby Museum, Library & Archives does not have a 'Friends Group' as such. However the umbrella organisation which runs the Museum, Library & Archives and which acts like a 'Friends Group', is The Whitby Literary & Philosophical Society. The Society was founded in 1823. It currently has about 800 members.

Members
  • can help with running the Society, Museum, Library & Archives
  • receive an annual report including interesting articles
  • attend the monthly lectures free of charge
  • enter the Museum free of charge
  • use the Library whenever the Museum is open. May borrow books.
  • attend occasional functions such as members' coffee mornings etc.
  • obtain a small discount on certain Society publications

Volunteer

Society members who volunteer to help come from all walks of life. Practical skills are as useful and welcome to the Museum & Library as 'Literary' or 'Research' skills.

The annual subscription for an individual member is currently £15 (payable in October each year) or £25 for two persons living at the same address. Aspiring members have to be proposed and seconded by existing members or provide references (consult the Hon. Membership Secretary). The Hon. Membership Secretary can be contacted as follows :
